As engagement season is just around the corner, planning for what to wear can be so difficult! Here are my top 10 tips for the best engagement session outfit.

Pick an outfit that matches the location you are shooting at

My husband and I shot this on self-timer during our travels to the Great Sand Dunes and I picked a mini dress from Cult Gaia because it matched the casualness of the environment. We were also hiking up hills of sand so I knew a maxi dress would make it hard to move in. Choosing an outfit where you feel comfortable in is key!

10 Tips for the Best Engagement Session Outfits

Think of a key dress to wear and coordinate your fiance’s outfit accordingly with matching colors.

Thinking of dressing two people can be overwhelming sometimes! So my recommendation is to start with what outfit you feel best in first. Then pull the colors from your outfit and pick out a suit to match it!

Think about coordinating texture and material

Here, I wore a feather dress from Cult Gaia. I knew that the softness of the fabric would go well with a white linen. I didn’t iron my husband’s shirt to pristine condition as I loved the raw, crinkle feel of linen that goes so well with the lightness of the feathers from the dress.

10 Tips for the Best Engagement Session Outfits

Think about the season that you’re shooting

For the best engagement session outfits, look at the season and environment which you would be shooting at for inspiration! When shooting in the summer months, I feel like lighter colors like white, khaki, light browns are great! In the Spring, I love pastels such as pink and purple. In the Winter, Blacks are great and in the fall, burgundy and dark deep colors are perfect!

My favorite colors to wear to an engagement session

For a more dressed up look, I love the look of a classic white dress with a tailored black tuxedo.

If you want to go for something casual, I think sticking with neutrals is a fail safe as it translates beautifully in film imagery.

Whenever in doubt, go all out!

When can you ever be extra and wear a fancy outfit and go on a photoshoot? Take this opportunity to really think about making your engagement session look like a Vogue Photoshoot.

Rent an engagement session outfit

For womenswear, Nova Octo is great for black-tie event wear. I love the brands that they carry such as Johanna Ortiz and Oscar de la Renta.

For menswear, renting from The Black Tux is great!

I love the idea of renting an outfit that you would probably only wear once for a photoshoot without dropping thousands of dollars on designer wear.

Hire a Makeup Artist and Hairstylist to top off your engagement session outfit

Hiring a professional makeup artist and hairstylist is so important! An engagement session usually lasts for around 2 hours and you really want your hair to stay put without having your curls flatten out by the time you get to your photo shoot location. Moreover, a makeup artist can help coordinate a makeup palette for your outfit and it really does make a huge difference with making you look to the nines for your engagement session outfit.
